Lake Morena: Home to the PCT Event

December 9, 2002, Tom and Greg went out to Lake Morena and presented two plaques of appreciation; one to the head ranger at Lake Morena and one to Frank Special, the regional director from the San Diego Co Parks & Rec. They also made up a large framed version of the PCTA Communicator article on the ADZ for their office there at Lake Morena.
Tom started off pointing out the purpose of the ADZ and described the event and its impact, noting that the "safety in numbers" aspect of the event provides security and comfort for hikers coming from outside of the California region who are uncomfortable with and not clearly knowledgeable of the illegal immigration situation around the southern terminus.
He pointed out that this Lake Morena event is now THE PCT event, gaining notoriety worldwide and attracting hikers from virtually every continent; that they have set a precedent that will be the envy of every County, State and National Park along the PCT. That this "National Treasure Resource" in their backyard is helped immensely in awareness, preservation and maintenance through the concerted efforts of them and us.
In attendance were a large group of the rangers past and present at Lake Morena, Frank Special, the PR Manager and the Trails Program Coordinator for the SD Co P&R.
